Community Spirit is alive and well in Penticton. The proof is in the community centres that abound in the city. They offer a wide range of recreation, programs and venues for residents.
The City Planners have done an excellent job of ensuring that Penticton’s community spirit is part of the draw of living in this wonderful city. Here is an overview of some of our community centres.
Penticton Community Centre
The Penticton Community Centre provides members with a host of health, fitness and recreation options. A spring/summer and fall/winter recreation guide provides a schedule of the various programs offered through the community centre. Click here to see the Recreation Guide for yourself.
This community centre also houses:
- A hard-wood floored gymnasium that features a full-sized basketball court, six badminton courts and two volleyball courts.
- A dance studio that features a hard-wood floor, mirrored walls, ballet bars, a sound system and piano.
- A number of multi-purpose program rooms.
The 400 seat Cleland Theatre is also in Penticton’s Community Centre. The theatre has state-of-the-art technical equipment, lighting and sound. It plays host to international performers, symphonies and comedians.
Penticton Community Centre Fitness Room
The fitness room provides members with free weight training and circuit training. The fitness room also features a cardio room that includes treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical and rowing machines. Many of the machines are wheelchair accessible.
The fitness room also offers private personal fitness training for an additional cost. They provide free orientations to get acquainted with the equipment.
Penticton Community Centre Swimming Pool
Penticton’s Community Centre Swimming Pool is a modern facility that features the following:
- 10 lane, 25 metre square lap pool.
- A leisure pool with a river and whirlpool.
- Sauna and steam room.
- Spacious changing areas for men, women and families.
The Penticton Memorial Arena is a 2,000 seat multi-purpose area. It hosts a variety of tournaments such as the CSSHL Championships, and is also home to the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame. The arena hosts figure skating events, concerts and even circuses, as well as the Okanagan Hockey School and the Okanagan Hockey Academy.
South Okanagan Events Complex
The SOEC contains over 95,000 square feet of meeting space, 3 ice arenas including the Memorial Arena mentioned above. A large chunk of this meeting space consists of the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre. This is one of the largest convention centres in British Columbia, and is home to a wide range of shows over the course of the year.
Connected to the SOEC is the South Okanagan Events Centre. This multi-purpose arena has a seating capacity of 5,000 and is the home of the Penticton Vees. The arena also plays host to the Young Stars Rookie Tournament every fall, which features rookies and prospects from many of the Canadian NHL teams. The South Okanagan Events Centre also accommodates a wide variety of concerts and special events throughout the year.
Penticton Curling Club
The Penticton Curling Club has been part of the community since 1954. The club is a non-profit organization that is home to a wide range of local curling clubs. If you are interested in curling or looking to join a team or league, then the Penticton Curling Club is for you.
